Aboriginal Storytelling Week
Hosted by Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples
Committee
The Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples
Committee (LSSAP) committee and the Parkland Regional
Library are taking the initiative to promote an Aboriginal
Storytelling Week, to be held throughout Saskatchewan
in February of each year to promote First Nations and
Métis oral traditions and the use of public libraries.
The winter timing for the Aboriginal Storytelling Week
observes the First Nations traditional time for storytelling.
The Ontario Library Association offered to support the
launch of the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Week
by sharing the Ontario poster graphics and text. The Saskatchewan
committee took up the offer and, with appropriate wording
changes, is also distributing the poster in Saskatchewan.
Poster
This project results from Recommendation 43 of the
Information is for Everyone, the final report
of the Minister's Advisory Committee on Library Services
for Aboriginal Peoples. The project is a partnership with
the Ontario Library Association (OLA), in their third
year of the project. The Saskatchewan committee wishes
to thank OLA for their assistance with promotional material.
The intent is to have a storyteller at various locations
throughout the province to promote culture, oral tradition
and reading to the residents of Saskatchewan. This project
will involve public, school and community libraries through
a variety of programming to enhance reading. The 2004
Week will be held from February 9–14 at 23 locations
throughout the province.
The launch of the
province wide project will take place on Monday, February
9th at the First Nations University of Canada, Regina,
at 10:00 a.m.
The Aboriginal Storytelling Launch will feature Regina
Public Library’s Aboriginal Storyteller in Residence,
Sharon Shorty. She is an advocate and practitioner of
her Yukon (Tlingit/N. Tutchone) oral traditions; sharing
stories she learned from her grandmothers. She will be
appearing as her comic character, “Gramma Susie”,
an Elder whom shares her love of traditional stories,
songs and dances. There will also be another Saskatchewan
Elder included in the program.
Funding was provided by the Saskatchewan Culture, Youth
and Recreation – Community Initiatives Fund on the
basis of an application from the Parkland Regional Library.
The Committe would like to thank the Saskatchewan Library
Association (SLA) for promoting this event in the Forum,
the official newsletter of SLA.
