Particulars of Position

Creation of original cataloguing records based on AARC2 (Anglo – American
Cataloging rules, 2nd edition) and Library of Congress for government documents,
texts, electronic and multimedia resources including CD-Rom’s, audio cassettes,
audio visual tapes and Internet (W.W.W.) resources including web pages,
databases and other on line resources.

Searching automated library systems and importing and editing appropriate
catalogue records from the Library or Congress, AMICUS and other international
databases. Verifying name authorities using Canada Authority files and
AMICUS to conform to National Library of Canada standards as well as Library
of Congress standards.

Maintenance of ATHENA library software, including installation of updates,
troubleshooting and maintenance of backup files on library server and CD-ROM.

Maintenance and implementation of management procedures for catalogued
materials.

Acting as client contact in the absence of the Information Specialist and
handling quick reference requests for information from in-house clientele
and occasionally non-staff clientele.

Researching sources as assigned by supervisor to fill specific interlibrary
loan and duplication request by staff.

Orders references and library supply material as requested by senior staff.

Maintenance of library web page.

Training of library patrons in the use of catalogue and other software
and hardware used in the library.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Ability, Experience, Training, etc.

Requires knowledge acquired through the completion of a two year Library
Technician diploma.

Requires knowledge of technical library practices including bibliographic
search techniques and MARC record cataloguing, standard library procedures,
and automated library management software.

Requires working knowledge of HTML and webpage creation and maintenance.

Requires ability to use information search techniques on the Internet to
find specific information.

Requires knowledge of AMICUS and Library of Congress databases.

Ability to use latest computer hardware (Dell Micro-computer and HP printer,
photocopier) and related software (Microsoft Email, Microsoft Word and
Excel), as well as OCR Document Scanner, HP photo-slide scanner, Kodak
picture card reader, and microfiche reader.

Requires a working knowledge of subjects that are typically dealt with
by the department.

Requires ability to organize and prioritize work assignments with
particular attention to detail.

Strong interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills
and the ability to work independently and within a team format are necessary.
