January 19, 2009 - The Folger Shakespeare Library, home to the world's largest collection of Shakespeare materials, is expanding access to its digital collection by offering free online access to over 20,000 images from the library's holdings.

January 21, 2009 - OCLC has released the new NetLibrary Media Center, which is a full-featured desktop application that allows library patrons to easily search, manage, transfer and listen to downloadable eAudiobooks.

February 23, 2009 - Library Journal's new national rating of public libraries, the L J Index of Public Library Service, identifies 256 "star" libraries. Created by Ray Lyons and Keith Curry Lance, it rates 7,115 public libraries.

February 27, 2009 - Mendeley is free social software for managing and sharing research papers. It is also a Web 2.0 site for discovering research trends and connecting to like-minded academics.

March 4, 2009 - Saskatoon Public Library is having a Teen Poetry Celebration during April which is National Poetry Month in Canada. Teens can submit an original poem to the Library by March 6, 2009. Additional information

March 30, 2009 -The CBC reports that "Canadian publishers and authors have been gathering at workshops to explore the legal ramifications of internet giant Google's massive book-digitization initiative. The sessions are being held in advance of the May 5 deadline for authors and publishers to opt out of Google's plan to digitize 20 million books and distribute them online and to new devices."

March 31, 2009 - University of Arizona Digital Information Management (DigIn) Certificate program admission is open for 2009-10. Scholarships are available. Review of applications for admissions and financial aid for Summer 2009 has been extended to April 15. The program is jointly administered by the University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science and the University of Arizona Outreach College.

April 15, 2009 - Your History, Your Heritage - Online Exhibition Themes. Library and Archives Canada (LAC) has created more than 100 virtual exhibitions over an eight-year span through the Canadian Culture Online Program.

April 15, 2009 - Gates Foundationand OCLC will develop community-based awareness campaign to increase support for libraries.

April 16, 2009 - Bloomsbury is to make selected titles available to library users via the digital platform Exact Editions. Bloomsbury said the "unique, affordable and user-friendly online initiative" would appeal to libraries "under pressure to reach larger audiences with tighter budgets". The Bloomsbury Libary Online will launch on May 4th.

April 16, 2009 - The Canadian Cochrane Network and Centre has announced that everyone in Canada with access to the Internet will be able to view the full content of The Cochrane Library, an on-line resource that provides evaluations on health treatments.

April 16, 2009 - The Newbery and Caldecott Awards: A Guide to the Medal and Honor Books, 2009 Edition is now available for purchase.

June 10, 2009 - Google has launched the Google Translator Toolkit an editor that enables translators to bring that human touch to machine translation.

June 11, 2009 - The Saskatchewan Digital Alliance (SDA) is leading a Directed Digitization Project that will assist Saskatchewan libraries, archives and other organizations in digitizing collections in any format (photos, documents, published materials, sound and film) that relate to the project theme The Saskatchewan War Experience. This includes any military action that Saskatchewan residents have participated in as well as life on the ‘home front'.

June 23, 2009 - A new version of the Oxford English Dictionary on CD-ROM is now available.

June 24, 2009 - The Institute for Museum and Library Services website has a great multimedia resources section that currently has a podcast series entitled "Libraries to the Rescue", which shares with libraries steps that other libraries have taken to help their communities.

June 25, 2009 - Saskatoon Public Library Board is pleased to announce that Anne Simpson of Antigonish, Nova Scotia will be the 29th Writer in Residence at the Library. Media release

June 25, 2009 - The Saskatoon Public Library Board is pleased to announce an opening date of Tuesday, July 28 for The Library on 20th Street Branch.  Media release

July 6, 2009 - The Adult Learning Knowledge Centre, an initiative of the Canadian Council on Learning, will terminate its operations on July 6, 2009.

July 7, 2009 - Open Library has upgraded to new software. Improvements include readable URLs, better default cover images, an improved type system and more APIs for developers, including the RESTful API.

July 8, 2009 - NISO and OCLC announce the publication of a white paper on "Streamlining Book Metadata Workflow," written by consultant Judy Luther (President, Informed Strategies), that analyzes the current state of metadata creation, exchange, and use throughout the book supply chain. The white paper was commissioned by NISO and OCLC as a follow-up to the Symposium for Publishers and Librarians held by OCLC on March 18-19, 2009 to discuss book metadata.

July 14, 2009 - JISC Netskills previews animations for Web 2.0 beginners. The first five of eight animations, covering social media, podcasting, RSS feeds, collaborative writing and microblogging are now available online.

July 15, 2009 - Bowker Introduces Books In Print 2.0, New Breakthrough Search and Discovery Platform for Book Information. News release

July 17, 2009 - "The Canadian Institutes of Health Research ( CIHR ), the National Research Council's Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information ( NRC - CISTI ), and the US National Library of Medicine ( NLM ) have announced a three-way partnership to establish PubMed Central Canada ( PMC Canada). PMC Canada will be a national digital repository of peer-reviewed health and life sciences literature, including research resulting from CIHR funding. This searchable Web-based repository will be permanent, stable and freely accessible." News release
