The Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples (LSSAP) committee was established in 1991. The committee was organized for information sharing on issues relating to library services for Aboriginal peoples in Saskatchewan based on identified needs by library and information workers from band school libraries, public libraries, and post-secondary institutions.
Impetus came from needs identified by Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre in Saskatoon; First Nations University of Canada, Regina and Prince Albert Campuses; the Gabriel Dumont Institute, Regina and Prince Albert Campuses, the Pahkisimon Nuye?ah Library System, Prince Albert Grand Council; University of Saskatchewan; Saskatoon Public Library; Regina Public Library; and with support from the Provincial Library and the Saskatchewan Library Association.
Presently, the LSSAP committee is working on initiatives including:
- The Aboriginal Storytelling Week to be held throughout Saskatchewan in February of each year to promote First Nations and Métis oral traditions and the use of public libraries. The winter timing for the Aboriginal Storytelling Week observes the First Nations traditional time for storytelling.
- Hosting a Pre-conference at the Saskatchewan Library Association 2004 Conference on "Elder Protocol and Aboriginal Cultural Awareness".
- Co-hosting the Fourth International Indigenous Librarians Forum in 2005.
The LSSAP committee meets approximately 6 times a year, rotating between Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Regina. As of January 2004, representatives on this committee are from the Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Center Library in Saskatoon; the First Nations University of Canada, Regina and Prince Albert Campuses; the Prince Albert Grand Council; Gabriel Dumont Institute, Regina and Prince Albert Campuses; the Pahkisimon Nuye?áh Library System; Saskatoon Public Library; Regina Public Library; University of Saskatchewan Libraries, First Nation Band school/public libraries, Parkland Regional Library, Lakeland Library Region, Touchwood Files Hills, and in support from the Provincial Library and the Saskatchewan Library Association.
Several members of the LSSAP Committee served on the Ministers' Advisory Committee on Library Services to Aboriginal People in 2001. The Advisory Committee's report, Information is for Everyone, was released in 2001.
